How to Make Productivity Your Superpower
From Freelancer to CEO, Give Your Business a Boost
As an entrepreneur of any form, you have a lot more in common with superheroes than you may think.
For starters, superheroes help others. Whether you’re an up-and-coming freelancer or the CEO of a major corporation, it is likely that you have put some major brainpower into thinking up and producing a product and/or service that works to help others.
Secondly, superheroes never give up when the going gets tough. If you’ve experienced enough success to refer to yourself as an entrepreneur in any sense, this is likely something you’re very familiar with. You’ve had to fight tooth and nail to secure that success and you did it through discipline and dedication.
Superheroes can also choose to get a job done by themselves but they know when to call in the reinforcements. Just like Justice League, you know the power of operating as a team in order to reach a common goal and you rely on the combined strengths of your team to get the job done.
While there are many other ways that entrepreneurs are like real-life superheroes, there is one characteristic of a superhero that can be especially difficult for entrepreneurs to uphold, our very own kryptonite: staying productive.
If you recognize yourself as an entrepreneur and are struggling to harness the power of productivity, I’ve come up with a few strategies you can incorporate into your daily life to truly make productivity your superpower.
Set Clearly Defined Goals
The first step in harnessing the power of productivity as an entrepreneur is all about setting clearly defined goals. These aren’t the typical five year plans you may be used to setting, rather, these are your next business milestones. An example of a clearly defined goal may be to “increase your customer numbers by 30 percent within the next 4 months” or to “add 1,000 subscribers to your email list within the next 6 months”.
While setting your clearly defined goals, it is crucial that you think smart and strategically. Namely, make your goals specific, relevant, quantifiable, time-bound, and of course, achievable. It would be counterproductive and ultimately disappointing, for example, to set the goal to be a millionaire by the end of the year as there is little you can do to attain this goal- especially in that time period.
Once you have set your clearly defined goal, write it down and place it somewhere where you’ll see it regularly. By keeping this goal visible, you effectively keep it at the forefront of your mind each and every day.
It is important to note that in the life of an entrepreneur, new opportunities and tasks are constantly arising. When this happens, ask yourself whether this opportunity or task will help you meet your specific goal. If they do, make it a part of your list. If they don’t, put them to the side so that you can more effectively focus your efforts and attention on more important tasks.
Write a Daily List
At the beginning of the day, a productive entrepreneur takes it upon themselves to create a daily list. This daily task list contains the most vital tasks that must be completed in the course of that specific day. In my own experience with using a daily task list, this practice has turned out to be far more effective than I could have ever imagined when it comes to boosting my productivity.
By taking the time to physically write down your tasks at the start of each day, you’ll find yourself left with a distraction-free list of things to do. Once these tasks have been completed, you can open your attention to more general tasks. This creates the ultimate system for heightened productivity in the mind of a super-entrepreneur. Try it out for yourself!
Fight Off Those Villanous Distractions
If you think you’re a great multi-tasker, it’s likely that you’ve simply convinced yourself that you can take everything on at once. Really, our brains aren’t built to rapidly switch from one task from the next or to complete tasks to the best of our ability simultaneously.
In fact, more often than not, multi-tasking rarely results in quality. While you may have convinced yourself that you’re the Superman or Superwoman of multi-tasking, studies show that after switching tasks it can take our brains up to 15 minutes to settle into proper work again.
So what should you do to really boost productivity?
Focus on one task at a time and complete that task to the best of your ability before moving on to the next. It’s likely that you’ll see a huge difference in the quality you can produce.
Properly Utilize Your Time
Finally, making the most use of the time available is a prime characteristic of the productive super-entrepreneur. As we’ve discussed, it is important that you do not spend time on unnecessary things and you would do well to make a daily task list. That being said, the proper utilization of your precious time is made much easier by organizing your tasks appropriately.
Organizing your tasks should be the main priority and any schedule that you create to keep you on track should be followed to the T. Further, an entrepreneur should always keep track of the activities that he/she has been spending time on since the morning hours and, in turn, review their tasks.
Keep Work Ambiance and Productivity Boosting Actions in Mind
When it comes to unlocking the superpower of productivity, work ambiance is yet another thing that plays a crucial role in enhancing productivity for the super-entrepreneur.
Work to improve your surroundings so that you, along with your other employees, can better focus on the work tasks at hand and prioritize accordingly. This involves organizing your dedicated workspace, livening up the space with decorative items that enhance your feelings of well-being, and working to block out distractions.
It’s also important to integrate good habits that help to improve your productivity on a personal level. You can do this by exercising regularly and consuming healthier foods.
One particular study showed that workday exercise not only improves feelings of well-being but participants also reported a 72 percent improvement in time management and workload completed on days when they exercised.
In a study by the British Journal of Health Psychology, adults who ate more healthily over a 13-day period had a greater sense of well-being and also demonstrated more feelings of meaning and purpose at work.
In addition, those employees who eat five portions of fruit and vegetables on at least four days per week show 25 percent higher job performance than those who do not.
Use Time Blocks to Your Advantage
For those of you who particularly struggle with focusing on prioritizing your tasks, time blocks act as a very valuable tool in your utility belt. Time blocks are mini-blocks of scheduled time throughout your day and, during each block of time, you are to focus on one very specific task while ignoring everything else.
Time blocks allow for maximum efficiency and can help to ensure that you cross all of the items off of your daily task list each day. Personally, I’ve narrowed down my most productive hours during the day to mornings. For this reason, I make sure that I’m working early enough to maximize my powers of productivity for the most productive hours of my day.
Identify when you tend to be the most productive and schedule time blocks for these specific hours. This will offer that extra boost to your productivity powers in a major way.
Don’t Let Productivity Be Your Kryptonite
As any super-entrepreneur will tell you, productivity tends to be our own personal kryptonite. Due to all of the things we have on our plates each day, it can be difficult to stay focused, organized, and efficient. Use each of the strategies I’ve outlined here to your advantage and give your productivity powers a boost and, therefore, boost your business!
